2008 Awards Night at the Glamorous Mamilanji - by Shay Naidoo

“Bright lights, big city. That was certainly the feeling as we walked into the glamorous Mamalanji nightclub, the setting for our 2008 awards evening. With a free bar and some thirsty mouths, the stage was set for another classic KCCC booze fest. Due to the nature of the games and various niggles, holidays and nagging girlfriends, a lot of us had not seen each other for some time. There were also some new faces at the event and it was nice to introduce them to some more of the seasoned players.

With a delicious barbecue and the free beer being served up, everyone seemed to be having a good time. However, despite best efforts from the organisers to make sure everyone turned up on time, the regular bout of tardiness set in and we had to postpone the start of the actual award proceedings by half an hour. Once our beloved Ricky turned up, it was down to business as the awards ceremony began.

A whole host of awards ranging from 'Cricketer of the Year' to 'Titanic Team Performance of the Year' (basically a metaphor for the most disastrous performance) were handed out via fielders and young players of the season. Many people were credited, showing the sheer amount of people who have contributed to the successful season we have had.

After the awards finished, we went down to the main club where we mixed it up with some of us piling down the drink, some of us hitting the dance floor, some of us doing both. The next three hours that ensued was a great laugh and we all had a cracking night.

However time waits for no man and the clock eventually hit 3am and it was time to go. The whole evening, like the entire season, was a resounding success. Whilst we all had a smashing night the most important thing to come out of it was the feeling of community that the event symbolised. If you ask any of the players who were fortunate enough to attend that evening, they will tell you one thing - "KCCC is only going to get better and better"
